Oregon Social Work Professional Organizations

Oregon Chapter – National Association of Social Workers
Oregon NASW’s mission is To promote the quality of social work practice with individuals, families, group and communities in Oregon, To promote social work methods and professional action aired at preventing and alleviating deprivation and distress, to improve the quality of life through the promotion of professional knowledge and skills and the utilization of research and to provide opportunity for the social work profession to work in unity toward maintaining and promoting high standards of practice and preparation for practice. This is a great site for social work information, jobs and legislative alerts. Some information is only available to members.

Oregon Long Term Care Social Workers Association
OLTCSWA was started in 1989 in an effort to create an organization specifically for social workers in long term care settings. OLTCSWA strives to be the regional leader in the ongoing definition and development of the professional role of the long term care social worker by providing representation, education, and networking.

Portland State University School of Social Work
The School of Social Work offers the only graduate social work education programs in Oregon accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. They now offer undergraduate courses. The School was established at Portland State University in 1961 by a resolution of the Oregon Legislature.

Oregon State Board of Clinical Social Workers
The mission of the Board is to protect Oregonians through the licensing and regulation of clinical social workers. (editor's note: when I was an Oregon LCSW, I always thought I was "serving" Oregonians and not "protecting" them by being licensed!)

State of Oregon Human Services

Oregon HIPAA Office
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is the first comprehensive federal protection of individual privacy. The U.S. Congress passed the act in 1996. It also sets national standards to protect personal health information, reduces health care fraud and waste through standardized electronic transactions and codes, and makes health coverage more portable.

Community Based Organizations

Jewish Family and Child Services
Jewish Family & Child Service has been serving Oregonians since 1947. JFCS is a private non-profit social service organization dedicated to assisting individuals and families within a context of Jewish values. We offer a wide range of human services including professional, confidential assistance and emergency financial help for the general Portland-area community without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

Portland Rescue Mission
Founded in 1949 at 316 West Burnside Street by John Van Diest Sr., the Mission opened its doors as the “John 3:16 Mission.” The Mission moved to larger facilities in 1954 at 111 W Burnside and changed its name to the Portland Rescue Mission. Since that time, the Mission has ministered to a diverse homeless population that now includes younger men, women with children, families, the mentally ill, the drug addicted, the handicapped, veterans and members of all races. With this changing population’s special needs, the Mission has adapted its services accordingly. The most recent change was their 1994 opening of “Shepherd’s Door,” a transitional women and children’s shelter. The Mission provides meals twice a day, serving as many as 100-200 men every day of the year. They also provide Showers and clothing distribution daily for the men who come to the Mission’s doors. And the Mission provides a safe, warm, clean environment in which the men can sleep every night of the year.

Raphael House
Since 1977 battered women and children have been coming to Raphael House for safety, advocacy, and support. Through a myriad of programs including children's programming, a 24-hour crisis line, case management, an emergency shelter, and Oregon's first transitional and long-term low-income housing programs for battered women, Raphael House has become Oregon's most comprehensive domestic violence intervention agency for women and children made homeless by domestic violence. Last year alone, Raphael House served more than 3,500 women and children by giving them the opportunity to build a self-sufficient life, free from violence.

Russian Oregon Social Services
Since 1994, ROSS has been helping Russian-speaking refugees and immigrants overcome the barriers they face in their adaptation to life in the United States.  This is done through advocacy and a series of educational programs aimed at increasing economic self-sufficiency.
